The hemp seed is the richest known source of polyunsaturated fats, containing a perfect 3:1 ratio of omega-6 linoleic acid and omega-3 linoleic acid. In fact, the hemp seed balance of Omega 3 to 6 fats is the perfect proportion for human dietary needs, making hemp an ideal addition to a healthy diet and lifestyle.

We simply remove the seeds' hard shells, yielding a 100% raw culinary product that tastes like pine nuts. Enjoy straight out of the bag or sprinkle on your favorite foods. You'll find great recipes and tips for adding hempseed into your diet at the Nutiva Kitchen.

More Info On This Product

Cultivated for thousands of years throughout Asia and the Middle East before finally making its way to Europe and then the Americas, hemp is an extremely versatile and hardy plant. Its many uses include food products, textiles, building materials, bio-plastics, auto parts and more. Hemp is not to be confused with marijuana. Although the two plants are related, hemp does not contain THC (the active ingredient in marijuana), but instead is known as one of the most nutritious foods on the planet. It was once widely grown in the United States for its fiber. In fact, one of our founding fathers, George Washington, was a hemp farmer!

Rich in protein, omega-fatty acids and fiber, hemp has a nutty-tasting seed with a wide variety of uses. Hemp is loaded with all 20 amino acids (including the 9 essential). This densely nutritious food is an excellent addition to the diet of anyone looking for plant-based protein, and is preferred by many vegetarians and vegans. The protein found in hemp seed is very digestible, making it a great choice for sensitive diets.

We have a variety of hemp products to help you add this amazing superfood to your diet. Hempseed is great for sprinkling over yogurt or salads, adding to shakes, or including in baked or sautéed dishes, while hemp oil can be used raw or in low heat cooking. Our variety of hemp protein powders make nutrient-rich shakes and smoothies.

The seed we use comes from certified organic and non-GMO hemp that is grown on farms in Canada. Hemp is the world’s most sustainable plant as it is easily cultivated and grown in a variety of areas, does not deplete the soil and requires less water than other crops. We’d love to support U.S. farmers, but it is currently not legal to grow it in this country! If you’re interested in learning more about the legal issues surrounding hemp, visit: Vote Hemp or The Hemp Industries Association.

All of our hemp products are gently processed to protect the vital nutrients and maintain high quality and great taste.

Best Frozen Veggie Burger

Are You Buying The Healthiest Frozen Veggie Burger?

Hilary's Burgers

I have a confession to make: I’ve been visiting the frozen section of Whole Foods more often lately. I would have NEVER, mark my words, found this new product on my own. I usually grab frozen fruits, veggies and ezekiel bread and I’m out of there, not giving a second look to all the pre-made foods available. My thoughts about the freezer section at the grocery store have now been changed forever thanks to Hilary’s Eat Well - The healthiest frozen store-bought veggie burger currently on the market.

The Ingredients
Below is the full list of ingredients for all the Hilary’s Eat Well burger varieties. As you can see, every ingredient is Food Babe approved. The ladies at Hilary’s Eat Well were already fans of Food Babe before they sent their burgers to me to review, so they knew that I was not going to be an easy critic when it came to the ingredients! Hilary’s Eat Well ingredients speak for themselves, but were their frozen hockey pucks going to taste good? I was skeptical at first. Sorry to call them hockey pucks, but let’s be honest, that’s what frozen veggie burgers look like straight out of the package, right?!
Hilarys Eat Well
These burgers went fast in my house – the entire Food Babe team loved them. They were so good, that I continue to buy them on my own and get frustrated when they are out of stock. One of the problems that I have found with various frozen veggie burgers, is the texture. Hilary’s got the texture of their burgers perfect, with nice bites of bigger pieces of vegetables and grains. The ingredients were not all mushed up into a patty, if you know what I mean.

My favorite way to prepare them is baked in the oven, then garnished with sprouts, avocado and tomato. You can also put the burgers in the toaster, which makes them a great item to leave in the house for loved ones who are slightly food-preparation-challenged, or for kids. I also love that the microwave is “not recommended” for this product. (Just another reason to throw out your microwave, right?)

Out of all the flavors I tried, Adzuki Bean, Hemp & Greens, and the Original Veggie – Adzuki Bean is my favorite, with Hemp & Greens as a close second. They also have a new “Root Veggie Burger” that has an abundance of yummy root vegetables. I tried a bite of this at the Natural Product’s  Expo East show, and it is fantastic too. I have yet to see the “Root Veggie Burgers” in stores, but when I do, I’ll definitely be taste testing them more with all my favorite toppings.

Hilary’s Eat Well created a spin off product called “Original Veggie Bites” too. These little bites of goodness are dynamite and are actually perfectly sized for children. They are full of the superfood quinoa, and other nutritious ingredients like coconut oil. They toast up to be golden brown and are like the healthiest form of tater tots you could ever buy. They are also really really good dipped in organic ketchup! Hilary’s Eat Well is so skilled at making these bites perfectly crispy on all sides.
Original Veggie Bites
Before I go, I just have to mention the care and attention this company gives to to their suppliers who source their high quality ingredients, as well as for their support for GMO Labeling. Not only is this company feeding the world the healthiest store-bought veggie burger, they are also going the extra mile as an advocate to safeguard the food supply.

Where To Find Hilary’s Eat Well & Giveaway
You can order Hilary’s Eat Well online or use the website to find a store near you. They are also offering a YEAR SUPPLY of burgers to a lucky reader. All you have to do is enter to win on their facebook page here to get your chance.

We all know finding store-bought meals that are actually good for you and not full of additives is HARD to do. But we all experience those days where the last thing we want to do is cook. Knowing about this hidden gem will make your life easier, save you time and get your belly fed fast with the most nutritious foods on the planet when that type of day strikes again.

I’m so thankful for this company and the work they are doing.
If you’ve tried Hilary’s Eat Well before or plan on trying them, I’d love to know your thoughts in the comments below. Also, if you know someone who could use a little assistance in the frozen veggie burger department, please share this post with them.

Good Luck!

Is Butter Secretly Ruining Your Health?

Growing up, butter was an absolute staple in my household. We thankfully never got into the margarine craze because my mother believed that butter was good for the brain. Turns out, she was right about that and scientists have now concluded that butter is actually good for you in other areas too. It’s high in a compound call CLA that protects you from tumor growth and cancer, is not inflammatory like man-made oils from corn, canola or soy, and provides a nice dose of Omega 3 fatty acids, if you get it from the right source. But finding the right source can be tricky given all the buzz words and fancy marketing these days. Choosing the wrong type of butter can secretly ruin your health without you even knowing it! Here’s a look at what’s really going on and how to choose the healthiest butter for you and your family.

Beware of Monsanto Butter
MonsantoButter

I call conventional butter “Monsanto Butter,” because it comes from cows fed almost entirely genetically engineered or GMO grains and Monsanto is the largest producer of GMOs.

Conventionally raised cows are most commonly fed GMO corn and soy, however, some farmers fatten up their feed with additional sugar from GMO sugar beets and cottonseed. Cotton is the most toxic crop because it isn’t treated as a food crop but as a textile (it has less regulation.) And then conventional dairy cow feed is sometimes fortified with additional protein, Omega 3 fatty acids and CLA from GMO rapeseed (canola) because the cows are not getting these nutrients naturally from the grass. GMO alfalfa hay is also commonly fed to cows. So basically, conventionally raised cows are almost entirely getting their food from GMOs – food that was created in a laboratory, that hasn’t been tested long term, but has produced horrific results in several alarming animals studies

Over 49% of all GMO corn is fed to animals or livestock. Only 2% of the GMO soybeans grown are actually fed to humans, the other 98% get fed to animals. Those figures are pretty scary once you consider the astronomical amounts of herbicides being sprayed on these GMO crops and what they are doing to the increase cancer rates, harm the environment and ourselves.

Land O’Lakes = Monsanto Butter
Land O’ Lakes was a staple in my household growing up. We’d use the whipped butter like it was nobody’s business – my mom would use it on her infamous parathas (Indian stuffed flat bread), in countless desserts and to make homemade ghee. Once I found out what was really happening at Land O’Lakes, my Mom and I had a little chat. I explained to her that Land O’Lakes is owned by a pro-GMO company called Dean Foods. Land O’Lakes co-developed genetically engineered alfalfa, directly contributing to the GMO animal feed supply. I also explained that Land O’Lakes contributed nearly $100,000 to the “No on I-522 Lobby” – the bill to label GMOs in Washington State. This is all on top of the fact that Land O’Lakes is not organic, raises their cows with growth hormones linked to cancer, antibiotics and harmful pesticide ridden GMO feed. I told my Mom she has to stop buying Land O’Lakes if we are going to change this world!

Knowing all these facts, plus the health risks of consuming GMOs, my Mom finally asked “what butter can I buy?” Well there are many brands out there that are light years ahead of Land O’Lakes. Here’s a Butter Buying Guide that will help you (and my Mama) navigate the butter aisle next time you hit the market:
ButterChoices
How to Choose The Most Nutritious Butter
  1. Organic - First and foremost, look for organic butter. This will ensure there are no growth hormones, antibiotics, harmful pesticides and GMOs being fed to the cows. Growth hormone or rbGH that is used to raise cows conventionally is linked to cancer and often accumulates in highest concentration in animal fat. One organic brand I’m suspicious of however, is Horizon, they are owned by Dean Foods (the same company that owns Land O’Lakes). The Cornucopia Institute has filed complaints for labeling their product organic while maintaining factory farm production methods. I won’t buy Horizon organic for that reason.
  2. Grass-fed - Grass-fed or pastured raised cows are going to be more nutritious than cows raised with grains. Remember, the highest amounts of the most beneficial CLA and Omega 3 fatty acids naturally come from grass-fed cows. Also grass-fed cows produce butter with 50 percent more vitamin A and E and 400 percent more beta carotene (which gives the grass-fed butter a deeper yellow color).
  3. Ghee - Ghee is clarified butter where all the proteins, milk solids and lactose is removed. This makes the butter more digestible, concentrated with nutrients and really great for immunity building. Ghee does not need to be refrigerated, it can stay on the counter for a few months without going bad. People with dairy allergies or sensitives often do ok consuming this type of butter. Pure Indian FoodsPurity Farms  and Ancient Organics have the best offerings in that they are both high quality, organic and grass-fed.
  4. In an ideal world, you would be able to find butter that is both organic, grass-fed and no additives like Organic Valley (in the green foil wrapper) , but sometimes that’s just not the case. In that circumstance, I would go for either an organic butter or grass-fed butter like Kerrygold (please note – Kerrygold uses some grains that could be GMOs a couple of months out of the year because grass doesn’t grow year round in Ireland – they admit that 3% of their feed could contain GMOs). Choosing regular organic butter will lessen your exposure to pesticides but will also provide less nutrition since the cows will mostly be fed organic grains vs. grass. Regardless, these choices are superior choices over conventional butter and both options (in light green on the chart above) will lessen your exposure to GMOs.
  5. Beware of butter mixes with labels like “with olive oil” – 9 times out of 10, these butters will have one or more GMO ingredients like soybean, corn or canola oil. These mixes may have questionable additives in them too – check the ingredient list just to be sure!
  6. Don’t Eat Butter? Here are some Vegan Substitutes - If you are vegan, skip all the “butter like” or fake butter spreads like Smart Balance that contain GMO oils, artificial ingredients made from petroleum and unnecessary preservatives. Instead, choose 100% coconut oil, olive oil, red palm oil (that is sustainably harvested from Ecuador and does not hurt the rainforest) or hemp oil instead. Also coconut manna, or butter works well too, when slightly heated it spreads just like butter. (These are also much healthier than organic spreads like Earth Balance that are usually a combo of inflammation causing oils).

Sharing the truth is the first step in changing the food system. If you know someone who is buying Monsanto butter, please share this information with them. Our choices can really change the marketplace, make us healthier  and change companies decisions to use these unhealthy ingredients.

Much Love, Food Babe

After reading Food Babe's investigation article a few weeks ago, I recently purchased the Purity Farms Organic Salt Free Ghee Clarified Butter -13 oz from Amazon, and will use it for any recipe that calls for a little bit of butter. So far it's been great:) I personally gave up dairy a couple years ago and switched to coconut oil and olive oil depending on the dish, but it's nice to have an alternative now for regular butter that's actually healthy!

I ordered the Vibram FiveFingers Bikila EVO and the Vibram KSO EVO Women's Running Shoe (still waiting for those to arrive). At first it was hard to pick the perfect size, purchasing them online. And I picked a size too small. I'm a shoe size 7.5, and first ordered size 37 which was too small, but reordered the size 38 which felt perfect but after walking around I realized i needed one size up. So, I ordered a size 39 and it was perfect! With a tiny bit of space enough for finger socks if I choose:)

Vibram FiveFingers Bikila EVO
Medium distance running in a minimalist shoe can be challenging for new minimalist users. It takes time for your foot to adjust to an increasingly thinner level of sole. The Bikila EVO is a fully redesigned shoe built for those looking for a shoe that provides the benefits of going barefoot and that has slightly more cushion to offer more comfort on a medium distance road run. The sole is still thin, and provides a bit more underfoot to ensure confidence while making the switch.

Block Mercury with Food

Health Ranger research breakthrough: How to block nearly all the mercury in your diet using common, everyday foods

As part of my ongoing scientific research into heavy metals, elemental retention and metals capturing (see explanatory videos here), I have identified and documented anti-heavy-metals substances which have a remarkable natural affinity for binding with and "capturing" heavy metals.

Why is this important? Because much of the "scientific" community today is actually corporate-driven junk science that's trying to poison you with mercury in vaccines, mercury in dental fillings, heavy metals in fluoride, GMOs, pesticides and more. It is extremely rare for anyone to actually spend time, money and effort to research how to REMOVE mercury from your body... and then publicly share that information in the interests of public health.

That's why I humbly ask that you share this article with as many people as possible, and especially share the chart below which describes the most effective natural foods and dietary substances for binding with mercury.

This information can protect your health and help save your life

What I'm about to share with you here are lifesaving secrets which can help protect you and your children from toxic dietary substances. Why does this matter? Because we are finding and documenting heavy metals in all sorts of dietary products, including organic foods, protein supplements, herbal supplements, beverages, vitamin pills and more. Much of what health-conscious people are eating today is contaminated with mercury, lead, cadmium and even tungsten as we have shown in related research.

Fortunately, there are ways to protect yourself from these toxic heavy metals during digestion. The secret to all this is found in certain natural substances which bind with, capture and help eliminate heavy metals from your digestive tract, preventing you from reabsorbing them.

Here at the Natural News Forensic Food Lab, I have spearheaded the pioneering research that searches for and documents these substances. So far, I've tested over 1,000 candidate substances for these metals capturing properties, and I've been able to identify many winners which are remarkably effective. One of my many goals with this research is to share these discoveries with the world so that lives can be protected and even saved.

The "scientific" community is many years behind the curve on this research area because the entire institution of corporate-driven science has zero interest in preventing disease when there's so much money to be made in treating it. Because of this, my own discoveries most likely will not be embraced by the greater scientific community for quite some time, but this is why I'm bringing this information directly to you right now -- so that you can apply this knowledge immediately, in your own life, long before conventional scientists finally admit that avoidance of toxins is crucial to supporting human health.

How to easily (and cheaply) capture dietary mercury

Mercury is the most easily-captured heavy metal of all. In any laboratory environment, mercury is well known to be a "sticky" element because it sticks to instrument tubing and vials. If I place a known quantity of mercury in a vial of nitric acid and water, for example, a measurement of the vial shows less mercury than should be present because some of that mercury sticks to the walls of the very instrument used to carry out the testing.

Interestingly, it turns out that mercury is also "sticks" to certain dietary fibers. In particular, my research has found that insoluble fruit fibers are extremely effective at capturing mercury during digestion. Mercury is unique in this way, as such fibers are very poor at binding with lead, cadmium, arsenic and other metals. But they stick to mercury like glue.

As part of my research into this phenomenon, I tested many dietary fibers, including psyllium husk fiber, guar gum, vegetable fibers and fruit fibers. The most effective fruit fiber of all was -- believe it or not -- strawberry fibers. (See full list below for the mercury binding effectiveness of various foods.)

Until today, nobody has known this seemingly simple fact, and even I didn't know it until I conducted this research. Now, I'm freely passing on the knowledge to you in the hopes that you will share it with others: Eat strawberries to block dietary mercury!

Captures over 95% of dietary mercury

In my tests, strawberries were able to capture over 95% of all the mercury added to the gastric acid solution in a human digestion simulator.

This effect was also confirmed for freeze-dried strawberries but not strawberry juice because pure juice lacks fibers (pulp).

Why strawberries? Because strawberries are the only common fruit with seeds on the outside. Under a microscope, you can see that each tiny strawberry seed is connected to the center of the strawberry via a bundle of plant fibers. These fibers, it turns out, are incredibly strong and are not easily digested in human digestion. They pass through you largely intact, much like psyllium husk fibers or insoluble vegetable fibers.

Isolated under a microscope, these strawberry fibers are also translucent, by the way. And what's really amazing is that they even resist digestion with nitric acid. Somehow, these fibers are amazingly strong and resilient, yet nearly invisible to the naked eye.

In the gastrointestinal tract, they function as "mercury sponges" that mop up mercury with amazing efficiency.

Even better than green grasses

In my laboratory testing, strawberries worked even better at binding to mercury than green grasses such as barley grass or wheat grass (see the full chart below).

This is great news for those who want healthy eating options which are also great-tasting. Simply eat some strawberries with your meal to mop up most of the mercury found in whatever else you ate (such as sushi, tuna, ocean fish, etc.).

If you don't like strawberries, you can use other fruits such as citrus fruits (eaten raw and whole, of course, with all the fibers intact). The next best fruits after strawberries are citrus fruits, followed by apples and pears.

Peanut butter even better than strawberries!

You'll probably find this fascinating, but peanut butter was even better than strawberries at binding with mercury, turning in an amazing 96% efficiency score at capturing dietary mercury. Apparently, the "stickiness" of peanut butter really gels with the stickiness of mercury. How about a tuna fish peanut butter and jelly sandwich?

Care to guess what was even better than peanut butter? Hemp protein.

I know, it seems counterintuitive. But I confirmed the results with several different hemp protein brands. All hemp proteins have a powerful "anti mercury effect." They capture around 98% of dietary mercury.

There was only one substance, however, that was even more powerful than strawberries, peanut butter and hemp protein. That substance is Clean Chlorella, our in-house chlorella brand which is so free of heavy metals that it seems to attract them like crazy. And just so you don't think I'm merely plugging our own product, it turns out that all chlorella products we tested were very good at capturing mercury, with effectiveness ranging from 96% to 99%.

Eat strawberries with all the following foods

Here's the practical upshot of all this: When you're eating ocean fish, tuna fish, seafood or sushi, you're probably eating mercury. We even found mercury in seafood snacks and pet treats.

How do you protect yourself from that mercury? Eat some fresh, whole strawberries with your meal. Or if you don't like strawberries, eat some peanut butter, hemp protein or take some chlorella. If you can't get any of those, eat a salad and chew it really well to loosen up the fibers and thereby increase their "stickiness" to mercury.

My research has revealed that eating ocean fish or seafood without something to mop up the mercury can be very toxic and dangerous to your health because you absorb the mercury through your intestinal walls. But eating ocean fish or seafood together with strawberries is extremely safe because virtually none of the mercury gets absorbed during digestion. The strawberries make your entire meal safer to consume!

And isn't that what we've already known about meals, anyway? Eat whole, fresh fruit or greens with every meal and you'll be a whole lot healthier. To do this in an easy-to-carry portable format, get some freeze-dried whole strawberries and take those with you to lunch (or on the airplane).

All this explains why I now carry freeze-dried strawberries and chlorella with me when I travel. Even if I'm forced to eat a less-than-healthy meal at a restaurant, I can eat some strawberries or chlorella with the meal and know I'm eliminating mercury instead of absorbing it. At many restaurants, you can even find strawberries at the salad bar. So chow down on some fresh fruit!

Important: Why strawberries don't block lead, cadmium and arsenic

As much as strawberries are fantastic at binding with mercury, they're really not very effective at binding with lead, cadmium or arsenic. In fact, fibers are not good binders with heavy metals like lead.

It turns out if you want to bind with lead, you have to rely on a more complex ionic process rather than physical fibers. I've done extensive research on that as well, and I've identified key substances which can selectively bind with lead, cadmium, arsenic and even aluminum, a very difficult metal to capture and eliminate.

To stay informed about my findings as I announce them, join my email newsletter at the end of this article, and I'll email you this breakthrough information as it gets published.

I'm also the first researcher to have announced a dietary formula which can selectively bind with cesium-137 radioactive isotopes during digestion, without causing high exposure to aluminum or lead in the process. More announcements coming soon on that front.

Important: Strawberries do not protect you from inhaled mercury via fillings or air pollution

As you apply this valuable knowledge to protect yourself from dietary mercury, please understand that strawberries in no way protect you from inhaled mercury.

In fact, mercury fillings (dental amalgams) are dangerous to your health not so much due to you eating the mercury but from inhaling the toxic mercury gas such fillings give off. Eating strawberries will not block your dental fillings from poisoning you with mercury.

Also, strawberries will not protect you from mercury in the atmosphere. If you live in North America, you are being poisoned by mercury blown over from China and emitted by China's ultra-dirty coal power plants. They release thousands of tons of mercury into the air each year, and a lot of that mercury finds it way to North America via air currents.

It should also be obvious that strawberries will not protect you from mercury in vaccines (and yes mercury is still used in popular vaccines as admitted by the CDC). If you are crazy enough to allow yourself to be injected with mercury in a flu shot, for example, you're going to need a whole lot more than strawberries to get that mercury out of your system. And you'd better hope it doesn't cause too much brain damage on the way out...

Pad Thai - gluten-free

Fabulous home made Pad Thai...courtesy of Marita's kitchen:)
Served with a sweet potato/quinoa patty, topped with avocado sauce and Sriracha drizzled on both dishes.

Ingredients:

  • 9 oz./250 g. pad Thai rice noodles (click on link to see what these look like)
  • 1.5 Tbsp. tamari sauce
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 fresh red or green chili, sliced
  • 1 thumb-size piece ginger, grated
  • 4 green onions, sliced
  • shredded cabbage
  • 1 egg
  • 2-3 cups bean sprouts
  • 1/3 cup dry-roasted unsalted peanuts or cashews, ground
  • 1 fresh lime, sliced into wedges
  • 2 Tbsp. coconut oil
  • cilantro
  • cucumber

  • PAD THAI SAUCE: (without tamarind* next time will try use some)
  • 1/3 cup veggie stock
  • 3 Tbsp. rice vinegar (or substitute white vinegar)
  • 1-2 Tbsp. lime juice
  • 3 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. fish sauce
  • 1 Tbsp. tamari sauce
  • 1/8 tsp. white pepper

Preparation:

  1. Combine 'pad Thai sauce' ingredients together in a cup, stirring well to dissolve sugar. Note that this sauce needs to taste sweet first, followed by sour and then salty to create good pad Thai. Set aside.
  2. Bring a large pot of water to boil. Dunk in rice noodles and switch off heat. Allow noodles to soak approximately 6 minutes, OR until soft enough to bend easily, but still firm and 'undercooked' by regular standards (this is the key to good pad Thai, so be sure not to over-soak or boil the noodles. They will finish cooking later). Drain and rinse noodles briefly with cold water to keep from sticking. Set aside.
  3. Heat a wok or large frying pan over medium-high heat. Drizzle in the coconut oil and swirl around, then add the garlic, chili, ginger, and the white parts of the green onion, reserving remaining for later. Stir-fry 1 minute to release the fragrance.
  4. Push ingredients aside and crack egg into center of pan. Stir quickly to scramble (or scramble before hand), then combine with other ingredients.
  5. Add prepared noodles and cabbage plus 3-4 Tbsp. of the pad Thai sauce. Using two utensils, lift and turn noodles to stir-fry and combine with other ingredients. Continue frying in this way, adding more of the sauce every minute or two, until all sauce has been added and the noodles are chewy-delicious and a little bit sticky (8-10 minutes). When sauce has been absorbed and noodles are cooked, fold in the bean sprouts (you want them to stay crispy).
  6. Remove from heat and taste-test, adding more fish sauce until desired taste is achieved. Portion out onto individual plates and add a lime wedge on the side. Before eating, top with remaining green onion, cilantro and squeeze over the lime wedge, then finish with a generous sprinkling of chopped/ground nuts. For those whole like it extra spicy, serve with Thai chili sauce or Sriracha, and ENJOY!
